Work front

Short answer
A delineated area of the construction site where works of a given type are carried out in a given period. The basic unit of planning and progress reporting.

The work front is the unit in which a construction site actually thinks about itself: a crew does not work "on the contract" — it works on a specific section, structure, or track. As long as the contract has a single work front, everything can be kept in a spreadsheet and in the site manager's head. As the number of parallel work fronts grows, the cost of coordination grows faster than linearly — because what multiplies is not the tasks but the links between them.

Why it is the primary data dimension

If progress, materials, acceptances, and issues share the "work front" dimension in the system, management questions become queries rather than investigations:

Step 1.Where we stand
Progress per work front, not per contract.
Step 2.What is blocking
Issues and material shortages pinned to the front.
Step 3.What we invoice
Measurement and acceptances pinned to the same front.

If that dimension is missing, each of these questions requires a separate compilation — and each compilation has a different definition of "done".

Related: directive schedule, as-built measurement.
